Top 5 Reasons to Update Your Sports Bra

By Linda The Bra Lady on September 5th, 2012 in Bra Fitting, Linda's Quick Tips

Have you been watching the US Open? I caught a few matches and was really impressed – and not just with those cute twins, the Bryan brothers! I mean I was impressed with how great some of the women tennis players looked in their sports bras. However, there are always a few misses out there. In the photo above, the athlete to the right has left it to her sports top to control her breasts. Not working. While on the left, Ms. Williams gets ready for a massive hit, and her breasts are still in place! If you are ready to hit the court, you better make sure your sports bra is, too. And I don’t mean a loose fitting, over the head number, with no elastic left in it. Not convinced? Keep reading to find out my top five reasons to update your sports bra!

Bra of the Month: Le Mystere Dream Tisha

By Linda The Bra Lady on July 12th, 2012 in Bra Fitting, Linda's Bra of the Month, Linda's Favorites

Remember when Oprah opened the women’s eyes to the importance of bra fitting? I sure do! She named the Le Mystere Dream Tisha as one of her favorite bras ever, and so did I. I have been fitting my customers in this bra for years now. You would think that its popularity would die down after a few years or new styles would come out to replace it, but the Dream Tisha has stuck around. Even with lots of new amazing styles out there, this still remains one of my most popular smooth, t-shirt bras for sizes 32C-44H!

Take a look at this amazing t-shirt bra and why it’s my latest Bra of the Month!

“Bra Tacks”: What “tacking” means and why it’s so important!

By Linda The Bra Lady on April 12th, 2012 in Bra Fitting, Linda's Quick Tips

A good bra is a bra that fits properly. Otherwise, why bother? Bras that do not fit well or are the wrong size for your body are uncomfortable, unflattering and make you unhappy. On the other hand, a bra that fits properly can help you feel thinner, more confident, and more comfortable. One of the most important signs of a properly fitting bra: it tacks. Say what? You heard me. Your bra should “tack” against your body – specifically in the front between your breast tissue, against your ribs. Not sure if yours is properly tacking or why it should in the first place? Read on!

Star Style: What Do They Wear Under There?

By Linda the Bra Lady on December 20th, 2011 in Bra Fitting, Linda's Quick Tips, Petite Fashion, Plus Size Fashion, Trend Watch

Celebrities seem to have it all: looks, money, fashion… but you don’t have to star in the latest blockbuster movie to look just as fabulous. Believe it or not, it’s all about wearing the right underpinnings. Trust me, we’ve all seen enough wardrobe malfunctions and terrible outfits on fabulous celebrities. It isn’t the money and fame that makes them look so good – it’s a darn good stylist and quality underpinnings. While I may not know exactly what Angelina or Jennifer has on under her dress, I can share my tried and true products that can help you get the same look. Here are a few of my favorite celebrity outfits and my secrets to just what they may be wearing under there…

Celebrity Style: Super high cut slit in sheer chiffon fabric

What to wear under there: A seamless skin-colored panty like the Commando Girl Short. It tricks the eye into thinking that they just might get a peek at something personal, but keeps you covered just in case it’s a windy day. Recommended for: Ladies who love their legs and thighs (or at least one of them). They’ll be on display.

Celebrity Style: V-neck dress down to there!

What to wear under there: If you have perky breasts, you can just use a little double-sided Hollywood Fashion Tape to keep the dress from falling away from your bust. You may also want to use some nipple covers like Low Beams or Nipsticks to keep the outline of your nipples from peeking through the dress material. Lastly, the Braza Bra is made of two separate bra stickers with no connection in the middle so it won’t show. Recommended for: Women with perky or petite breasts who don’t need a super supportive bra or whose breast shape is less full in the center of their chest.

Celebrity Style: Classic white button down blouse

What to wear under there: This look may seem effortless, but it can actually be a bit tricky for some women to wear. A minimizer bra (like this one from Wacoal) disperses breast tissue from the middle of the body, decreasing your chances of puckering buttons. Also, a little Hollywood Fashion Tape may keep the button placate in place. Hint: If you are very full busted with a tiny waist, consider getting a larger shirt altered to fit your slim waist or buying ready made shirts from brands like Campbell and Kate. Recommended for: The classic woman whose breasts look fab in a minimizer.

Celebrity Style: Sleek and expecting

What to wear under there: Moms to be don’t have to limit their wardrobe to over-sized sacks. Pair a slim fitting dress with a pair of Spanx Power Mama Maternity Shapewear or Panythose. You’ll get sleek hips and thighs while still leaving room for your baby bump! And don’t forget to wear the right size bra. Expectant mothers and their bodies go through a lot of changes. Check in for a re-fitting as your bust and belly grows. Recommended for: Pregnant women who still want to rock their wardrobe.

Celebrity Style: Seriously sheer dress

What to wear under there: Woah! For a totally see-through dress you have two choices: You can try to fool them and wear something seamless and nude (like the Commando line of thongs and Girlshorts) or cover up under there. Try a nude slip underneath for a layer of protection, or pair the dress with a black slip for a monochromatic look. Trust me, the mini length and gorgeous lace detail will still get you the attention that you deserve without having to showcase too much. Recommended for: Women who don’t mind almost baring it all!

Celebrity Style: Full figured and one shouldered

What to wear under there: Va-va-voom! To look this red-hot when you have a full bust to support, make sure you wear a serious strapless bra. Two of my favorites for the truly full-busted are from Fantasie and Panache. To accentuate those curves, pair that strapless with a fabulous pair of Spanx or a Squeem. Want it all together? Try a longline bra. Even then, I say wear some fabulous shapewear for a seamless hourglass look. Recommended for: The woman who proudly sports a full cup and dangerous curves.

Celebrity Style: Royal frocks with a lady-like touch

What to wear under there: Nothing says lady-like more than hosiery. Maybe you want to wear a neutral shade to hide a few flaws (c’mon, don’t pretend you don’t have a few veins here or there). I suggest a pair that’s doing double duty like Spanx hosiery! They’ll shape your bum and give you sexy legs. And for a bit more fun, try an opaque pair or go even crazier with a young and exciting print from Commando (bonus: they have a dig free waistband!). Recommended for: Sheers and solids for the fashionista who still wants to remain a lady and bold prints for the girl who can’t wait to rock the runway.

Celebrity Style: Backless and Fabulous

What to wear under there: When you don’t have a bra band to keep things up (believe it or not, the band is the most important for support) you have to go “sticky”. Try using adhesive and seamless styles like the Nu Bra, Braza Bra and the new Fashion Forms Body Sculpting Backless bra. Tip: only apply to skin when it’s dry and free of lotions or oils. Also, don’t expect this bra to stay up if you’re going to run a marathon. Lots of physical activity and sweat can cause it to slip. Otherwise, you’re in the clear. Recommended for: Women with firmer or petite breasts who need a little help shaping their bust but want to show off a dynamite back.

Shine like a star!

Linda’s BFF: Bra Fan Forever is Tina!

By Linda the Bra Lady on November 14th, 2011 in Bra Fitting, Linda's BFF: Bra Fan Forever

Hello fellow Bra Fans! It’s time to announce our latest BFF: Bra Fan Forever! You may remember my first BFF Ingrid, a military wife who lives in Japan and needed help via email to find the perfect petite bra. This time, our BFF Tina came in to the store after a 30 pound weight loss and desperately needed our help. (PS: Weight loss is one of the best reasons to get a bra fitting. Not only will you be a brand new size, but your breast shape and density will be totally different.) She was having such a hard time searching for her size (and style) on her own that she even contemplated regaining the weight after all of her hard work to lose it! Yikes! I’m so happy that my Bra Divas could help Tina. The photo of her (to the right)  ”expresses her overall excitement of being uplifted (in more ways than one)”. Find out what has Tina so uplifted, and why she is the newest BFF!

Tina’s Email to Linda’s:

I had an awesome experience at Linda the Bra Lady.

Between February 2011 and August 2011, I lost close to 30 pounds (transitioning from a 38DDD to 34F). With the shedding of the pounds and inches the girls started to shrink (and head south). I visited several stores . . . you name a store that sells bras and I have probably been there. No exaggeration, I probably tried on close to 150 bras and each time I walked out of the store disappointed and almost in tears. It had gotten to a point where I contemplated regaining some of the weight to alleviate the torture I was feeling.

One day I was talking to one of my colleagues about my dilemma and she mentioned that she had seen Linda the Bra Lady on a show or something. We agreed that we would visit the store but she was taking too long for me. I called, made an appointment and arrived at your Lexington Avenue store in hopes of walking out with a bra. The associate, Kim, was very kind. I explained to her all of the above, shared with her my preference of the style of bra that works for me. She measured me and then went in search to find MY Bra.  She returned to the fitting room with several options and each time I put on a bra my smile got brighter and brighter. I walked out of the store sporting my new bra (AND two more in a cute pink bag) plus a handful of cards to share with my friends.  A month or two later, I ordered a bra online and I also returned to the store to purchase a strapless for an event I was attending.

When I told my boyfriend that I had finally found bras that fit, he did not care how much they cost, he was just happy that I was finally happy. All in all, I had a wonderful experience. The girls are headed north (BIG SMILE) and now all of my clothes look perfect because I am wearing the perfect bra. I owe all of this to you and your wonderful staff. I am forever a customer.

Have an awesome day and continue doing what you do well, putting smiles on women’s face.

WOW! What a difference a bra makes! Here is Tina looking fabulous in her new bra. Doesn’t she look amazing?

Tina’s Interview:

Name: My name is Tina

Age: I am a wonderful 43 years young.

Why are you Linda’s BFF? After shedding a lot of pounds and inches, finding a bra that fit became torture. My bra expert helped me find the bra(s) that worked for my body shape and size without having to try on hundreds to reach the perfect one. Kim assisted me in finding the perfect bra and her Bra Diva skills were awesome. After explaining my dilemma and the style of bra I preferred, she returned with several options and they all worked.

Were you wearing the right size when you came to Linda’s? When I first visited Linda’s I was wearing a 38DDD because that was my size prior to losing the weight. I definitely was not wearing the right size, which I knew. But I was very surprised to learn I was a 34F. I definitely was not going to find that size in any normal store.

What was your favorite part about getting a fitting? My favorite part was Kim’s patience in working with me and lifting my spirits by telling me that she was going to find a bra that will fit me.

How did you feel and look after your fitting? Before my visit, I was torn (and somewhat depressed) because I could not find a bra to fit. After the fitting, I felt absolutely awesome. As I tried on each bra Kim recommended, my spirits were truly lifted (and so were the girls).  It fit exactly how it was supposed to without any gapping or puckering. I wore a tank shirt to my fitting and when I walked out the door wearing my new bra, the silhouette in my tank shirt looked totally different. I stopped by almost every mirror and window to view the appearance my new bra had created.

Do you have a favorite brand, style or type of bra? I love, love, love Chantelle. I have somewhat full (but not firm) breasts and they fit perfectly into the Chantelle bra. There is no bulging on the sides nor are there multiple boobs in the front. Everything is in its place.

Would you tell your friends to get a fitting at Linda’s? I would definitely tell my friends to get a fitting at Linda’s. In fact, when I left the store, I grabbed a few . . . ok, a lot of cards to pass on to my friends.

Why do you think getting fit for bras is so important for women? Getting fit for bras is important because you learn what your actual size is instead of going to a store and grabbing a bra that you ‘think’ fits you properly. Yes, we know our bodies. However, a bra fitter can help you find the perfect bra for your shape and size.

What was the best piece of advice that you got, or the most important thing that you learned at Linda’s? I learned that there is a bra that will fit the shape of my breasts and it does not have to feel like torture to find it.

Want to find out what Tina’s so excited about for yourself? Make an appointment for a fitting at one of my stores in New York City, or email my Bra Divas for help across the globe!
