“Bra Tacks”: What “tacking” means and why it’s so important!

By Linda The Bra Lady on April 12th, 2012

A good bra is a bra that fits properly. Otherwise, why bother? Bras that do not fit well or are the wrong size for your body are uncomfortable, unflattering and make you unhappy. On the other hand, a bra that fits properly can help you feel thinner, more confident, and more comfortable. One of the most important signs of a properly fitting bra: it tacks. Say what? You heard me. Your bra should “tack” against your body – specifically in the front between your breast tissue, against your ribs. Not sure if yours is properly tacking or why it should in the first place? Read on!

What does it mean when your bra tacks?

“Tacking” refers to the underwire and front portion of your bra resting firmly against the front of your body and in between your breasts. (See the photo for reference.) And “firmly” against your body does not mean “resting on there” or “sorta hanging out around that general area”. Firm means your bra has to be snug so that it can actually hug you and stay against your body instead of floating around and (inevitably) down.

Why should my bra tack?

If your bra properly tacks in place, that means it fits! And a bra that fits is a bra that feels and looks fabulous! Tacking allows your bra to anchor onto something and gives a secure feeling and starts with a snug band. A loose bra band means sagging breasts in the front and constant riding up in the back. A snug band means supported breasts and a bra that stays in place! So if you can easily fit a finger (or more?!) between the front of your bra and your body, it is not tacking properly and it is too loose. Additionally, if your bra band is snug enough, but your cups are too small, your bra can not tack. Your underwire will rest on top of your breast tissue, floating away from your ribs and sternum. Breast tissue is soft and is not a good anchor for your bra. Be sure to get ALL of your breast tissue inside the wire and cup. Your wire should rest firmly on your body all the way around, but especially in the front where it will tack. Get them all in there? Hurray! That means your breasts will now look fabulous.

What kind of bras should tack?

All underwire bras in the right size should tack. That’s right. All of them. Non-underwire bras don’t have the benefit of a an underwire’s firmness and shape to help tack in the middle so they’re off the hook- but the band should still be snug. You don’t want any “underboob” slipping out of your bras, do you!? Bra styles with wires that are taller or higher in the middle will have more material to tack. Some styles, by design, tack more than others. But that doesn’t mean that a very low plunge bra with very little material in the front shouldn’t tack. You heard me before, all underwire bras should tack firmly against your body. However, depending on your breast shape (women with very full breasts at the top), body type (if you have a concave chest), or the design of the bra (all styles are different), some bras will not tack at the top of your cleavage. Most will, but not all of them. The important part is toward the bottom (like in the photo above).

If your bra is not tacking you may want to try a new size, come in for a fitting, or simply replace your dead and stretched out bra.

Time to get tacky (in a good way)!

 darianawheeler You bet!

Hi Linda, I just have a few questions. I have Full breast, but never been able to find the "right" fitting bra.The cups seem to have a gap in the top . My bra that I'm wearing now does not fit at all and I decided to measure without a bra on. Will the fit be accurate according to your bra calculator? I also measured and it shows a bra size that I've never even gave thought that this would be my cup size. Can you give me advice? I live in Indiana and would not be able to come in for a fitting. Thank you so much ...I appreciate the help in advance !!!! Brenda

Hi Brenda! Great questions. Here are some answers: 1) Remember, a bra that tacks from bottom to top in the center of your breasts is ideal, but not always doable depending on your breast shape and the bra style. That being said, if you know your bra is not the right size, we may be able to remedy that. 2) The Bra Calculator is a great resource, but it's not the end-all-be-all. It's just a starting point. A professional fitter can take into account your shape, bra styles, measurements, and needs. A calculator can only spit out an estimated size. Also, measuring with your bra on (even if it fits poorly) is typically better than with no bra at all. Without a bra, larger breasts can sag, making it hard to measure directly under the bust, AND making it impossible to measure around the fullest part of the bust since ... well... they're falling toward the ground! 3) Believe it or not, that "size you've never considered" may be right! So many women think bras stop at DDD. But my most popular sizes are F and G cups, and I fit women for N cups all the time! Totally normal. Give it shot! I suggest that you get some personal advice from my online bra fitters (AKA Bra Divas). They can help via phone, chat or email for REAL fitting advice :) http://www.lindasonline.com/contact-us.html XO Linda

I came into your shop on lexington on Friday at noon and you fitted me with two bras. they have made a world of difference in how I look and feel thank you so much for your time and patience

Thanks Tracy! So glad to hear it :D

It's a poly cotton blend, but this is the bra I've been wearing for 12 years, new one often :) I'm a 44H and this is my GO TO bra!

forgot the style..... LOL You need the poly for the support. Cotton can't do it on it's own. Glamorise SPORT Full-Figure Sports Racerback Front-Close Bra Style 1206

Hi Linda! I have a question. I was one of those girls who developed really early (I was an A & B cup in 3rd grade) and have continued over my life to grow and seems that I am still growing. I've been fitted by 'a professional' before and even they didn't seem to get it right, as most of my bras even thought wonderful brands have not ever seems to fit quite right. I'm a UK size and I wear a 34H, 34HH, and 36GG. My breasts are large, full, very heavy, and seem to overfill almost any cup. On the bras I wear the most often (brands Freya, Fantasie, and Elomi are the only brands I buy) sometimes the bra won't tack between my clevage. Is it possible that I might need a smaller band? The bra does fit underneath my breasts flat to my chest. Some of my bras do fit very comfortably, just a problem i have with some of them.

Great question, Elizabeth! Some women with very full breast tissue will find that many styles won't tack up by their cleavage or even directly in between their breasts. However, it should lie flat against your body at the bottom where the band meets the underwire. Make sure that all of your breast tissue is fitting inside the wire - the wire should be sitting on your body, not on top of breast tissue, on the outside of the cup near your arm pits and under your breast tissue. If that's not happening, try a larger cup (the brands you mentioned do carry fabulous styles in larger cup sizes) annnnnd do a double check on your back size. Because you have fuller breasts, your bra is "working harder" and the back will stretch out faster than someone with very petite breasts. Just being honest. So be sure to start nice and snug on the loosest hook so that you can adjust as it stretches out. xo

I would like to let bra manufacturers know; I have looked high and low for a cotton, racer-back, plus size bra everywhere I can. Have not found any that are just right. Let me explain, I am 61 yrs and am a plus size, about a 42 DD, I have many old sports injuries which make it painful and very difficult to hitch my arms up behind my back to hook a bra, so i want a racer-back or something similar to slip over my head. I also MUST have a COTTON bra. Polyester makes me itch, nylon spandex is the best I can find, all cotton bras cannot support well, nylon spandex can support however it feels a little 'sweaty'. Since I have become a big girl over the years I do not expect to have a 'sports' bra i can run and jump in. I did all that years ago. PLEASE PLEASE can someone design a cotton spandex stretchy bra without hooks in larger sizes so I can get a bra on to wear it? All the bras i like are up to 38 or 40 and the s,m,l,xl is not very reliable at my size, PLEASE make some bras for seniors with good support and cotton and no hooks. From the reviews I have read (alot of them) the 45-55 and 65 & over purchase a lot of 'sport bras' for exactly the same reason i have just listed; ease of getting on. Kathy Harvey, SD, CA

Hi Kathy! I know - this is hard to find. You're right that cotton does not off as much support as other materials, so I think that's why there's a lack of cotton styles like this in your size. Also, racerbacks or front closures often only have one row of hooks, making it impossible to adjust the bra as it stretches. Eek! HOWEVER, I have found a few front closures that may work: http://bit.ly/HG37Ht In fact, the Annette bra may work and comes in 42DD http://www.lindasonline.com/annette-front-close-surgery-surgical-bra-10479-nude.html but it's not the most supportive style ever. Just being honest. Also, if you're sensitive to some fabrics, try using a very gentle wash like Leblanc. Believe it or not, regular detergents and putting bras in the dryer cause the nylon to get crispy and rough, causing irritation (AND for your bras to stretch out too soon). Just a few ideas to help you! I'll be on the lookout for fabulous cotton styles. :D

Kathy - I can't offer advice, but I can offer sympathy. I'm only 33, and a 34DDD, but I would love for a front-closing racerback bra to exist somehow for bigger busts. I have a convertible bra that I can criss-cross in back, but I feel the straps get stretched out when I try to wear it that way, and then I can't re-adjust them because, well, my boobs get in the way!
